FoD #179: present tense
Really....is it already Memorial Day Weekend (in the United States)?
The traditional start of summer in the U.S. is upon us, but it just doesn't feel the same this year, does it?
It's still a three day weekend for most of you though, so I'm not going to blather on here too much this week, Friends.
Instead of making you digest a big involved preamble, here are some recommendations for your listening pleasure to skim over the long weekend:
>>MUSIC: If you watched the final Last Dance last week, you may have picked up that the last song they played was "Present Tense," fittingly by a band that was originally named after a hoops player, but now commonly known by a different name. Been stuck in my head all week -- some poetic, thought provoking lyrics for you to check out.
Additionally, over the past few months in our house we've been kind of obsessed with discovering older songs that were later sampled in famous contemporary songs.
So if you are interested, let me introduce you to the original songs behind Bust a Move, Gangsta's Paradise, The Real Slim Shady, and Crazy in Love. If you have another good (and obscure) ones, pass them along!
>>FoD PODCASTS: My zeal for talking to interesting people in my network has given way to the realities of having to edit and produce the segments myself....so as I result I have been slower to post these as I would like.
But you entrepreneur and sales FoDs should definitely make some time to check out my recent conversations with Jonathan Brickman and Ed McDonnell, EVP at Salesforce. Both fun and informative discussions -- you will absolutely learn a few things.
There are trailers on the podcast pages for these as well as on the YouTube channel if you'd rather listen to shorter clips. I have few more in the queue as well so stay tuned!
>>ON THE FUTURE OF HIGHER ED: I highly recommend listening to this podcast, with contributions by the presidents of Boston University, Arizona State and American University.
Some thought provoking insights provided here and keeps your attention the entire time. Great for those who work in higher ed, have family members of undergrad/grad age, or are just interested in the topic. A bubble about to burst folks.
And if you really don't want to listen, I suggest reading this (good one about the impact that college football has on American universities' finances), this, this, and this one by Scott Galloway.
>>HUMOR: After the favorable reaction I received from many to the preamble chronicling a recent conversation I had with my mother a few weeks back, I had to pass this hilarious "Mother Meditation" along -- created by comedian, impressionist and Emmy winner Kyle Dunnigan, who also happened to be a high school classmate of mine as well. It's like he was talking to my own mother.....or perhaps someone you know....
That's it. I know a bunch of you that will really appreciate the gangsta move by the pizzeria guy in the Last Word, so be sure to check that out as well.
Enjoy the weekend!
XOXO
Dave

A pizzeria owner made money buying his own $24 pizzas from DoorDash for $16 — www.theverge.com
They order 10 pizzas this way, and it worked! The money was free, a seamless transfer from SoftBank’s deep venture capital-lined pockets to Roy’s friend’s business bank account. Eventually, in another series of what Roy hilariously calls “trades,” they just ordered pizza dough through DoorDash for $75 in pure profit.
It’s possible to win arbitrage opportunities when VC backed companies are more concerned with audience development than profits. Pretty cool account of how a pizza restauranteur recognized and took advantage of this by buying his own pies from DoorDash. And if you are really interested in this story, I highly recommend diving into the more detailed source material.
