FoD #182: como say Lama
Choose to be optimistic, it feels better.
Honestly, got nothing really big to say this week, Friends.
And as we usually do at this time of year, you can expect that these intros may scale back a bit as we head into summer over the next few weeks. I'll lean more heavily on the curated stories for your reading pleasure.
That said, I would like to thank you for your patience and the generally positive feedback on last week's preamble. I know what has been unfolding can be polarizing at times, but it was hard to not personally weigh in with all that was on my mind. In the end, I lost one subscriber as a result, but whatevs....As my old high school football coach used to say, "you gotta do, watcha gotta do."
This week, you'll notice that I happen to have not 1 but 2 articles featuring the Dalai Lama for you. It was not by design, but probably not a bad thing either. Nothing too kooky or heavy on the mindfulness, I promise. Certainly nothing controversial.
Finally, a quick shout out to all of the Friends with young family members graduating or moving up from one school to the next -- I know this no where near how you envisioned it would be. We were there this time last year, and I cannot imagine the feelings you are having right now. It is certainly a new and different world right now.
That's all folks. Have a great week, enjoy the articles below, check in with someone you have spoken to in a while, and, lastly, WEAR A MASK IF YOU ARE GOING OUT. Seriously, even though we are opening up, we are not out of the woods yet. The world needs as many Friends of Dave as it can have! Stay safe and healthy!
XOXO
Dave

The Dalai Lama on Why Leaders Should Be Mindful, Selfless, and Compassionate
A better world is one where people are happier. Why? Because all human beings want to be happy, and no one wants to suffer. Our desire for happiness is something we all have in common.
Leadership requires genuine concern and empathy for others. It always seems so simple and common sense, yet so hard in practice.....

Ocean data needs a sea change to help navigate the warming world
FOR THE DATA FRIENDS: Great look at the explosion in ocean related data and information over the past decade. This article calls for rethinking how this data is collected, shared, accessed and analyzed. The same problems pointed out here could be applied to just about ANY ALT DATA source as well. Also underscores what I keep saying: every business is a data business.
Reverse engineer your marketing strategy
A former boss and mentor, Penny Herscher, once told me "Literally write the press release announcing an initiative before you start it. Then, go make that happen." This is along those lines.
KPIs You Shouldn’t Care About (and the Ones You Actually Should)
This is an excellent guide for the sales and marketing folks and executives. It might seem like common sense, but I guarantee you are tracking some things that are probably not important. And if you like it, I encourage you to take a look at previous parts of this discussion (links embedded in article).

Stop Saying 'Back To Normal' — www.cbinsights.com
We always overestimate the change that will occur in the next two years and underestimate the change that will occur in the next ten” in “The Road Ahead.” But I like mine better.
Instead of wanting the past back, want the future sooner.
Or in other words: don't yearn to make something as good as it might have been before -- focus on making it better now. Interesting read.
