Friends of Dave #150: How Could You Do That, Karen?
Busy week so going to keep it short here.
This week was a bit hectic and I've been going on a tear lately with the preambles, so I am going to keep this one kind of short and easy. Plus, honestly, every story below is worth checking out this week -- so worth using your time there.
First, a quick plug: I was recently interviewed for a podcast that I think you all might like. It's called the DadCo. Show and it is produced by Terry Chiu out of Manchester, UK. Terry and I worked together a few years back and it was great to reconnect at the suggestion of mutual Friend Louise Capewell and chat about what he is doing with his show. And yes, Terry has also joined the wolf pack and is a Friend of Dave.
Some long time Friends of Dave know I began to dabble in podcasting about a year and half ago. I love the medium and it is so easy to do technically. But to do it well and put episodes together consistently can take a bit of time, thought, and work when you are producing them by yourself. I just have not been able to do it -- but I do want to find a way to get back to it.
That's why I admire Terry's work on this and hope you will either check out a bit of the podcast (and the others he has done) or watch some of the YouTube version of the interview in the "Last Word" below. Really high quality stuff.
We had a natural flowing discussion about careers, consulting, juggling priorities with family, what success looks like, and what constitutes happiness. Terry was an engaging interviewer and, despite the 3000 mile difference, he made it feel like we were sitting next to each other.
When it comes down to it, we all have unique points of view, interests and journeys. And there are definitely people interested in hearing about them! So if you are looking for ways to share your story and increase the visibility of your company or personal brand, podcasting (like producing a weekly newsletter) can be a convenient way to develop and create compelling content. It is much easier for people get to know the breadth and depth of who you are and consume the content than if they had to go to a website, read a resume or even visit your LinkedIn profile. And, trust me, it can be both fun and cathartic.
If you have been kicking around the idea of getting your story out there, it is time to jump into the pool, Friends. Feel free to give me a shout if you have any questions or are looking for suggestions on the basic technical aspects of producing a podcast, discussion material or, hell, if you just need a guest!
In the meantime, I hope you like the selections below. And if you are wondering what the subject line has to do with any of this, make your way to the Randomness...have a good weekend.
XOXO
Dave
Think on This...
Privacy is a collective concern
When we tell companies about ourselves, we also give away details about others, too. This is increasingly going to become a bigger social concern and topic of conversation Friends, so good to think about it.

11 entrepreneurs and CEOs reveal the best tips to negotiate anything
One leader happily overpaid by 300% in a negotiation, because it gave him the best outcome. For some seasoned negotiators, these may seem like common sense, but good reminders and validation if you are using some of these strategies. Also a GREAT one to pass along to younger members of the team.
Don't Serve Burnt Pizza — Why Companies Should Build LOVED Products, Not Just Viable Ones
“Say you’re trying to test whether people like pizza. If you serve them burnt pizza, you’re not getting feedback on whether they like pizza. You only know that they don’t like burnt pizza.”
READ THIS ONE. Product builders should be relentless in striving for Minimum Lovable and not just settle for the Minimum Viable Product-- this puts the customer and their experience at the center of the equation and will ultimately give you a better understanding of their interest in your solution.
How Pizza Hut stopped innovating and fell behind Domino’s
His edict was that Pizza Hut needed to release a new invention approximately every six to eight weeks. Considering new pizzas had to be tested for at least 18 months, this required an astonishing level of planning.
AND THIS ONE. Once an innovation powerhouse, with creations like Stuffed Crust and BigFoot, Pizza Hut has been forced to shift focus from food to technology. Such great lessons here for both entrepreneurs and incumbent companies. If pizza can be innovated, so can what you offer.

Here's video of my full podcast with Terry Chiu, former colleague, current Friend of Dave, and host of the DadCo Show. We had fun and covered a lot of ground. It surprisingly flows pretty quickly -- if you like the FoD preambles or just, consider it a long video version of one. And even if you can't watch the whole thing, definitely make sure to follow Terry on Instagram!
