Friends of Dave #236: 15 hours at a waffle house
Too Many Daves and The Power of Seeing Your Face
I was on a GotoMeet recently with someone in Australia and during the pre-meeting banter, he mentioned a poem by Dr. Seuss called "Too Many Daves" and wondered if I was familiar with it.
To be honest, in my near half century on this planet, I had to admit that I do not recall ever having it read to me or hearing it before.
My business contact was surprised and explained that he has a brother named Dave and this poem was frequently read in his house growing up. It was funny, and frankly refreshing, to learn this bit of personal detail from someone I had just met.
I know we are all so worn out from the video meetings post COVID, but they do also provide a reminder that we can connect with people so much more effectively when we are able to see their face. It allows people to be more vulnerable because they can share visual cues to complement the words that are spoken.
It is hard to imagine going back to the days where people would actually sit at a conference room table and huddle around a speakerphone to conduct business -- while nothing replaces in person interaction, it's just really clear that you cannot connect with people the same way when you can't see their face.
With all of that said, for no other reason than to entertain and amuse you, I present to you the Dr. Seuss poem here. And if you are really interested, I highly recommend watching a short video of it being recited with accompanying claymation animation. >>>CLICK HERE <<<
Too Many Daves
by Dr. Seuss
Did I ever tell you that Mrs. McCave
Had twenty-three sons and she named them all Dave?
Well, she did. And that wasn’t a smart thing to do.
You see, when she wants one and calls out, “Yoo-Hoo!
Come into the house, Dave!” she doesn’t get one.
All twenty-three Daves of hers come on the run!
This makes things quite difficult at the McCaves’
As you can imagine, with so many Daves.
And often she wishes that, when they were born,
She had named one of them Bodkin Van Horn
And one of them Hoos-Foos. And one of them Snimm.
And one of them Hot-Shot. And one Sunny Jim.
And one of them Shadrack. And one of them Blinkey.
And one of them Stuffy. And one of them Stinkey.
Another one Putt-Putt. Another one Moon Face.
Another one Marvin O’Gravel Balloon Face.
And one of them Ziggy. And one Soggy Muff.
One Buffalo Bill. And one Biffalo Buff.
And one of them Sneepy. And one Weepy Weed.
And one Paris Garters. And one Harris Tweed.
And one of them Sir Michael Carmichael Zutt
And one of them Oliver Boliver Butt
And one of them Zanzibar Buck-Buck McFate …
But she didn’t do it.
And now it’s too late.
Hope you liked that. While there may be too many Daves, I think we can all agree there can NEVER be too many Friends of Dave. And probably never one named Zanzibar Buck-Buck McFate either...
Enjoy the articles below. Nothing too long or crazy this week.
XOXO
Dave
Think on This...
There’s a reason that some of our greatest modern writers — J.K. Rowling, Neil Gaiman, Stephen King, Joyce Carol Oates, the list goes on — still prefer longhand to a digital manuscript (for first drafts, at least). It’s ineffably simple: There’s more magic, and power, to be found on the page than on the screen.
I'm a visual person and can confirm that actually writing something by hand etches it in my memory more than typing. Not only was this an easy read, I had to include this source for no other reason than to imply that handwriting is manly.
