Friends of Dave #239: woke coke
Let me sleep on it...baby, baby, let me sleep on it....
Friends, if you are of a certain age, there is no doubt you remember the classic Meatloaf party song "Paradise by the Dashboard Light".
I was having a series of business conversations with some people this week that reminded me of this song.
It's a relatable, funny, tragic lifetime story told in just over 8 minutes. I mean, name another song that has youth, hormones, endless love and New York Yankee legend and broadcaster Phil Rizzuto of all things.
About midway through the song the question is asked in refrain:
I gotta know right now!
Before we go any further
Do you love me?
And will you love me forever?
What's it going to be boy....yes or no?
There usually comes a time in any relationship (personal or professional) where, at one point or another, you have to make a decision about whether you are in or you are out.
What's it going to be: yes or no?
It's a close ended question. It's pretty absolute. There is no "kinda" or "sorta" or "maybe".
There certainly is no room for Meatloaf's response:
Let me sleep on it
Baby, baby let me sleep on it
Let me sleep on it
And I'll give you an answer in the morning
No, they need to know right now. And, in real life, it is usually not as cut and dry as someone else stopping everything and asking you the question. You have to force the issue and make your mind up for yourself.
Despite all that has happened before that moment, and all that might possibly happen following that moment, you need to decide are you "in" or are you "out"?
In business, things happen. Deals happen. Promotions happen. Luck happens. Conversely, often the things you want to have happen don't go as you had hoped.
If you really want to be "out" then you need to have the guts to say you are out. If you stay you are going to be miserable, the people around you are going to be miserable, and it completely does a disservice and disrespects those who want to be "in." And you will inevitably, like Meatloaf in the song, find yourself suffering and praying for the end of time.
But when things don't go your way, if you are willing to radically accept your situation, you will find opportunity. It may not be the same opportunity as you first envisioned, but having the courage to say "yes" or say you are "in," even in the most trying situations, can still yield a good result.
Just remember, which ever way you choose, there are usually no rewards for people who want to choose "maybe" or forever sleep on it. It may be cold and lonely in the deep dark night, but there is no chance at paradise if you sleep on it.
So what's it going to be, yes or no?
I can tell you this: guaranteed if you know the song it will be in your head all day. While it is, I am hoping you opt in and check out the links this week. Some interesting stuff including some nostalgia you are not going to want to miss. Have a good one everyone!
XOXO
Dave
