Three day weekend here in the US + us doing the ‘ol college drop off (see the very funny and oh so true McSweeney’s piece on that below) + busy week can only equal one thing.
Short preamble.
For those of you finding yourselves with an emptier nest this long Labor Day weekend, a salute.
You did a fine job raising your bundle of joy, and I guarantee they will likely both struggle at times and thrive at times in the year ahead. You leaving them at the curb of that over priced institution of higher learning or moving them into that over priced, sh*tty apartment might feel a little sad, but it is all part of this process. They, as young adults, need to get on with their lives and the journey that lies ahead. We, as weary parents, need to get our lives back.
Drinks all around. 🍻
And if you have kids not yet old enough for college, a salute.
Your little ones are probably starting up some sort of school right now. I guarantee they will likely both struggle at times and thrive at times in the year ahead. This is what will make them resilient and ready for you to drop them off at that over priced institution of higher learning in a few years. But at least the stress of finding productive things for them to do to keep them off their phones, tablets and gaming systems is over.
Drinks all around. 🍻
Finally, for those Friends without kids or kids in your house, a salute.
You lucky bastards likely get to have a simple, last relaxing long weekend to end the summer before the year end holiday ad blitz and Christmas music starts. I guarantee you will likely both struggle at times and thrive at times in the year ahead. But at least it will be your struggles and triumphs not someone else’s. So put those white pants away, pull on a sweatshirt and get yourself a pumpkin spiced something this weekend — you are heading into decorative gourd season guilt free.
Drinks all around. 🍻
Yes, Friends, it was that kind of week…I threw in a couple extra article for you this week if you have the time. Enjoy the long weekend. 🍻🍻🍻
XOXO
Dave
And now a few things to make you smarter…
Submarines are crucial for navies because they provide stealthy, strategic capabilities for surveillance, deterrence, and offensive operations in underwater environments.

Research suggests that aging hits us in waves. You might feel like you’re on a slow, gradual decline, but, at the molecular level, you’re likely to be hit by two waves of changes: first in your 40s and another in your 60s.
Dotting almost all the 46,876 miles of U.S. interstates are rest stops that prioritize neither rest nor stop. Swipe your card at the pump, come in if you want, bring it up to the register, get back in your car and leave. Learn about Autogrill and how they make the art of rest stops right in Europe.
There are places that are hard to get to, places that are less explored than others, and places you’re forbidden from visiting—and then there are places that you might want to go to, but they no longer exist. From land masses wiped out by changing climates to waterfalls erased by human action, here are 10 spots you won’t be able to put on your vacation bucket list.
It’s been a long, stressful, idle-hands summer full of sloth, poor choices, nervousness, petty arguments, and tearful goodbyes. Now it’s time to drop your greatest earthly treasure off at college. How will you survive it?
This may be the funniest thing you will read all week — if you know, you know. Whether you have dropped off a kid a school or you were that kid, guaranteed you will share this one with at least one friend.
