Friends of Dave #67: Big Things Happening Here
Do you have something interesting to say? If so, I want to talk to you.
So last week I gave a hint to my latest idea: I'm launching a Friends of Dave podcast. Guess who is starring in it? You.
The idea for the podcast is simple: it will be an entertaining, somewhat informal, approximately 30 minute long "fireside chat" with individual subscribers of the Friends of Dave email. Look at it as basically an extension of this newsletter. During the discussion we will cover a range of topics from how we know each other to what you are working on right now to what things you are thinking about, reading or keep you up at night. I'm using a super easy platform to host it called Anchor -- it does not require any sophisticated equipment, conversations can be done remotely, and it produces a high quality result with just a smartphone.
You all have such interesting backgrounds, jobs and common connections -- I'd like to leverage this community to give you an opportunity share your story, help curate your own personal "brand" and, most of all, have a little fun. You can check out the two early podcasts I have done here to get a sense of what I am putting together (still a work in progress). Doesn't matter what your title is or what you are currently doing -- everyone has a unique story.
Are you interested? If so, here's what I am asking in return: I'm always looking to expand the reach of this email with more subscribers. Those of you who are want to be on the podcast and can get me at least 5 new subscribers will be first to go. Simply forward the new subscribers this link:
https://www.getrevue.co/profile/davidafrankel
or go there and sign them up yourself (please let them know that you did so, however).
I have no way of tracking who brought who in, so it will be on the honor system, Friends of Dave. That's just how we roll around here. Drop me an email at dave@slingstonegroup.com when you are ready to go and I will send you details about setting up for the podcast and coordinate a time. It should be both easy and fun!
In the meantime, here are this week's articles. Enjoy!
XOXO

The Lie Detector in the Age of Alternative Facts — www.theatlantic.com
It is a time of declining trust in law enforcement, in government, in journalism, in the institutions that exist to ensure the stability of American life. Lie detectors are fitting metaphors for all that: They are, in their empty promises that truth can be made legible and laid bare, embodiments of a moment of deep epistemic anxiety.
What is really true? Americans are desperately seeking truth in machines that are unable to provide it.
The "Condom Snorting Challenge" Was Tide Pods' Final Revenge — www.wired.com
So it turns out, this was never a thing. The alleged teen trend existed only in the articles reporting its trendiness. But the teardown of how this became "news" is an interesting lesson in how social media has changed the reporting game.

People think that talking about AI and ML and NLP makes them and their companies look smart or progressive. It doesn't, particularly if they are not also talking about the quality of the data being used. Here are some fundamental steps every organization should take to ensure higher-quality data and better results from their data science initiatives.

John Legend: Pride (In the Name of Love)
It was 50 years ago this week that the world lost Martin Luther King Jr. in Memphis. John Legend does not disappoint with this version of the U2 song that recalls this turbulent time in our history.
