When you listen, you may learn something new.Busy week here, so this preamble is going to be relatively short. I was reminded on a few occasions this week of a quote from the Dalai Lama:“When you talk, you are only repeating what you already know. But if you listen, you may learn something new.”People who know me know that I like to talk. Maybe you like to talk too. It can be so damn important to us to hear ourselves talk. But it's amazing how hard it can be to listen. In fact, listening is like sneezing: you reflexively cannot sneeze without closing your eyes. You reflexively cannot listen when you are talking, either. When we are young we tend to think that a time for learning will come to an end at some point when we get older. We believe our roles change as we get further from school. Perhaps we have a family, make a lot of money, get a big title, have a lot of power or manage a lot of people. We think that's when it less important to listen to others, because we obviously know something. But the world is ever changing. And the smart ones know that, while they know something, they don't know everything. They will never know everything. So if you are like me and like talking, make sure you also keep an open mind and embrace listening and learning too. It is the key to ensuring you don't repeat what you already know. And that, my FoDs, is when others will really want to listen to you talk. Have a good one. XOXODave
