Friends of Dave #238: beaches have secrets
The intro is a lot like Forrest Gump....
Our 10 year old son watched Forrest Gump for the first time a week ago -- not sure why it was such a pressing thing for him to do so, but he enjoyed it. I was surprised by how much he got the real message behind it. He said he liked the ping pong playing too.
He also appreciated the classic line "Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get."
That's sort of like this preamble of this newsletter every week. It's like a box of chocolates.
So in the spirit of that, I know it was a short week for most of us here in the US, but it was a pretty busy one on this end.
As a result, no great words of wisdom or entertaining story from me in the intro this week, Friends.
If you are looking for something, perhaps use this as a reason to go re-watch Forrest Gump. I'm sure you will see it from a different perspective watching it after many years like I did.
Or check out the intro from last week (it was actually more than I typically write before a long weekend) or perhaps one from this week back a few years ago.
In the meantime, I promise you that the articles this week do not disappoint. Check them out and enjoy. Better yet...share them with a friend and get them to subscribe to the newsletter! We could always use more FoDs in the house!
Have a good and safe one.
XOXO
Dave

Why struggling companies promote women: the glass cliff, explained — www.vox.com
“When firms are doing poorly, the really qualified white male candidates say, ‘I don’t want to step into this,’” she said. “Women and minorities might feel like this might be their only shot, so they need to go ahead and take it.”
When women reach the upper ranks of power, they’re most often put into precarious positions, meaning there’s a greater risk for them to fall. I had never seen it from this point of view before and I totally agree. Great share within a share from FoD Monica Wright.

From Blondie to Nina Simone: 10 amazing songs you never knew were covers — faroutmagazine.co.uk It’s the sort of the cliché that holds enough truth to warrant its place in musical spiel: when a cover is done well the artist makes a song their own. Sometimes they even do it so effectively that the maker’s mark is worn off and lost to the bowels Wikipedia page obscurity.
